KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan has hailed a contribution of 16.5 million euros (US$17.4 million) from the European Union (EU).
In a statement, EU said: “This funding will enable WFP to continue providing lifesaving support to some of the most vulnerable families and nutrition programmes for mothers and young children.”
WFP has already started distributing food to communities in remote areas that have almost been cut off by snow and ice.
Nearly 15 million people were estimated to be experiencing crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity this winter, the report added.
Earlier, WFP had announced it needed more than $111 million to continue its operations over the next six months in the country.
It said EU had contributed $92,500,000 in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in the past two years.
Three days ago, EU had allocated 36 million euros to support internally displaced people and Afghan refugees in Iran, Pakistan and Central Asian countries.
